Why Makers Matter

By Dan Mandell, Director, and Chris Rommel, EVP

March 11th, 2026

As embedded systems grow more complex with the rise of edge AI, heterogeneous compute architectures, and Linux-based development environments, maker platforms are becoming essential tools for engineers evaluating processors, accelerators, and development frameworks before moving into production.

This report examines how hobbyist and prototyping platforms are expanding beyond experimentation to support real-world product development. It highlights the growing role of maker ecosystems, development boards from leading semiconductor vendors, and new initiatives such as Qualcomm’s integration of Arduino and Edge Impulse that are bridging early prototyping with scalable edge AI deployment.
