AI in Retail

by Jackson Kuja & David Krebs

March 2026

Retail stores are under growing pressure to perform as sales floors, fulfillment centers, and self-service environments while managing shrink, margins, and labor constraints. In response, AI in retail has shifted from experimentation to operational necessity, with retailers deploying AI solutions to improve execution across inventory management, checkout, loss prevention, and frontline workforce enablement.

VDC Research’s latest retail technology research examines where AI-enabled workflows are delivering real value in store operations and where they fall short. Based on input from retail IT and operations leaders, the study highlights the conditions required to scale AI successfully. Download the Executive Brief to see how leading retailers are modernizing store operations and driving measurable performance gains.
